lots of information regarding your placenta and
the remedies available. This is where you can
easily access our ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ section.
What is so special about my placenta?
Your placenta is an incredible organ which has been uniquely designed for your baby and is an integral part of your pregnancy and birth. The placenta physically connects you to your unborn baby feeding essential oxygen, nutrients and vitamins. After the birth of your baby your body will birth your placenta. The birth of the placenta leaves a wound in the uterus which can cause blood loss of 1/8 to 1/10 of your body’s total volume. We believe the mammalian placenta was made to be consumed and make up for this loss by giving the new mother essential fats, proteins, bioavailable iron and essential hormones to heal wounds and aid the body in self recovery after birth.
Why should I consider consuming my placenta?
Dried placenta powder was recognised as a potent medicine in Europe for centuries and used to treat and cure many ailments, mostly those surrounding birth. However, since the late 19th century, most natural birthing methods have been replaced by modern birthing techniques, losing along the way many valuable traditions practiced for centuries. The benefits of consuming the placenta are being rediscovered and scientists are beginning to study placentophagy. Today there is anecdotal evidence and scientific studies that suggest consuming the placenta can be just as beneficial for humans as it is for other mammals. Testimonials from our clients reveal that consuming the placenta after birth may improve energy levels, increase milk production and reduce bleeding and the risk of postpartum haemorrhage, thus creating an overall healthier post-birth recovery. Will placenta capsules help prevent the ‘Baby Blues’ and/or Post-Natal Depression?
The ‘baby blues’ is a known phenomenon after childbirth and mothers are often told to expect to feel sad, anxious and very emotional around the third day after the birth, usually coinciding with milk engorging the breasts. These symptoms can sometimes develop into post-natal depression. Studies have proven that the symptoms of post-natal depression are linked with a significant lack of essential nutrients and hormones such as progesterone, vitamin B6 and CRH (our stress reducer hormone), all of which are of high supply in the placenta. Consuming the placenta in raw smoothies or in capsules is thought to nourish the mother, replacing lost essential nutrients and hormones following birth and may help to prevent the ‘baby blues’ and post-natal depression.
Why should I consider adding smoothies to my placenta package? Smoothies are made using a small raw piece of your placenta. (Leaving plenty left for your capsules.) Raw placenta is known for its high contents of stem cells and growth factors which together heal damaged tissue and organs at an incredible rate. Consuming the placenta raw is the most natural and effective way to benefit from your placenta after birth. Your smoothie will contain a handful of fruit, a banana, and spring water. Simple and delicious…you really can’t taste the placenta, I absolutely promise! In short, you will get a higher amount of nutrients, very soon after you give birth, for an earlier “boost.” In fact, I believe the smoothies to be so effective that in my next pregnancy I am going to have my entire placenta made into smoothies.
If you are considering smoothies, please read the document “smoothies, how it works” which lets you know the logistics of making and delivering this fresh product.
When should I book my placenta encapsulation service?
I advise you book your encapsulation as early as you know you want to do it, but at least 3 weeks before your estimated due date.
What does the process entail? Approx. 3 weeks before your due date, your chiller pack with be delivered to you via the post. (A cooler bag with ice blocks, a container and instructions for your midwife and you.) Once you have received it, we will have a Facetime chat to go through the paperwork inside it.
You will take this pack with you to the hospital when you go into labour. If you are having a home birth you will keep it with you there.
After you have birthed your baby and placenta, your midwife will place your placenta in the container. Your birth partner will put the container into the cooler bag, surrounded by the freezer blocks. Your birth partner will call me (I am available 24hrs a day.) and I will come to the hospital or your home (depending on the time you gave birth, how long you are staying in hospital etc) to collect it. I will take it away and turn it into capsules and return them to you via Royal Mail, Special Delivery, between 1-3 days later. (So far, 100% of the time, capsules have been ready within 24hrs, but sometimes circumstances may mean it could take a little longer.)
If you are having smoothies, you will have your 1st one within 12hrs and often within 4hrs if you give birth during the day.
